“CHRISTMAS DAY—AND GOD HELP ME!"
“I HOPE MY BODY WILL BE FOUND SOON.”
A MAN WHO COULDN’T MAKE GOOD.
PATHETIC LETTER RECEIVED BY THE POLICE.
[PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM] AUCKLAND, Dec. 29. Written in pencil in a scholarlyhand the Devonport police received a pathetic letter by the mail yesterday. The letter, which the police believe to be genuine, reads as follows: “To all whom it may concern. — “Go to the police at Devonport. “I have been down about six weeks, I think, wandering about, sleeping anywhere and living—well, no, only existing—anyhow. But my .poor bead is so very funny I don’t know what I am saying hair my time. I have only once tasted meat for tlie whole time. I did try hard to get on and put myself right again, but I could, not get on and all the time I tried to put on a cheerful face. I felt quite sure that I would be able to pull round, but what did me was that I was promised a very good job. by a man who holds pretty well the highest position in Auckland, but then ho took it and gave it to another fellow. God forgive him and me too! I am sorry to give all this trouble to anyone. May Gocl, the All-For giving One, have mercy on me. I hope my body will be found soon. My head is splitting and I can hardly crawl about. Christmas Day and God help me!—J. J. Burrows.”
The Devonport police are making inquiries.
