PERSONAL NOTES.

A London cable states that the King is shooting at Sandringham, and is very well. Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., has returned from Motu. Lady Carroll arrived by the Takapuna yesterday. > Dr. Scott returned from Auckland by the Monowai yesterday.

Mr W. F. Cedenvall returned to Gisborne yesterday.

Mr Charles Maurice was a passenger south by last night’s steamer. Mr A. J. Paterson, Borough Engineer, went South by last night’s steamer.

Mr. Crowther, clerk of the Court at ’airoa, has left for Christchurch on hid ay.

Mr. G. B. Signull, clerk of the Wairoa County Council, is at present at Masterton.

Mr. P. B. Meredith, telegraphist, has been transferred from Dannevirke to Yv airoa

liev. Father Lane and party leave to-day for Tologa Bay, where a Catholic bazaar will be opened. Bishop Julius and his wife are passengers to New Zealand by the Warl’imoo, which left Sydney yesterday. -—P.A. cable.

Mr C. E. Armstrong, District Engineer, and Mrs Armstrong, left for the South last evening, to spend a few days’ at Palmeston North.

Mr Donald McKenzie, an olcl resident of the Wairarapa, died several days ago. A sister of deceased lives at Waipawa. and a. brother at Gisborne.

Mr Sidney Edward Greville Smith, a well-known journalist, died at Hamilton on Tuesday of heart disease, aged 57. At various times he was connected with the “North Otago Times,” the “Waikato Times,” the “Marlborough Times,” the “N.Z. Observer,” and the “N.Z. Times,” besides a number of Australian journals. Of late years lie held a controlling interest in the “Te Aroha Mail”, of which he was editor at the time of his death. Two of the deceased gentleman’s sons (Messrs Gomez Bradley Smith and Ivor Smith) reside in Gisborne.
