THE CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP.

THIRD AND FOURTH ROUNDS COMPLETED.

SAINSBURY LOSES ONE AND IVINS ONE.

[PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM! NELSON, December 29.' The third and fourth rounds of the New Zealand Chess Championship tournament were concluded yesterday.

All the .matches ' were interesting. Following is a brief description of the match in the third round between the Gisborne .player Sainsbury and Gyles: This was a Giuoco Piano opening, and Sainsbury, pushing forward his queen’s pawn, broke up the centre. Gyles opened up liis knight side pawns to drive back 'Sainsbury’s attack, and ian exchange of pieces in the middle game left Sainsbury’s centre weak. Gyles pressed tlie attack and, although Sainsbury put up a good game, lie could not prevent Gyles from queening a pawn and resigned. In the fourth round Sainsbury met Maunsell. Maun sell adopted the Petroff defence in reply to Sainsbury’s opening and early gave his opponent a chance to break up the position by checking at bishop’s'seventh. Difficulties increased for Maunsell, having to give up a queen to prevent a mate. Maunsell resigned on his lltli move, up till now the shortest game of the tourney. Following shows tlie position of players at the end of the fourth round:
