NEW YEAR’S DAY.
WHERE THE HOLIDAY MAY BE SPENT.
To-morrow all calendars dealing with the y-ear 1912 may be to-rn up and their places filled by any of the-many---new ones which have been distributed by- -progressive local tradesmen. In honor of the birth of a new year of course a close holiday will be observed and the tired townsman, jaded after a year of work and with not even the worry which a surfeit of ■dinner is apt to impart to Christmas Day-, may turn liis attention unreservedly- toward®! a day out. And there is much afoot that is attractive. Following the example of Boxing Daymany- people will certainly enjoy their, private, picnics -by launch up the rivers or by drag or motor to any- of tlie beauty- spots which attract the town, while the railway- trip to Otoko' or intermediate stations will surely also find favor.
For tile rest the Te Karaka Racing Club’s meeting may prove attractive. The various -events to be contested have filled fairly- well, and some interesting racing is anticipated. Should the. weather hold good no doubt there will be a large attendance of the public from all parts of the district. A special train will leave Gisborne for Te Karaka racecourse at 9 a.m., returning at 4.40 p.m.
Again, a most enjoyable outing is the Poverty Bay Scottish Society’s annual picnic, which will be held in Mr E. M. Hutchinson’s grounds at Waikohu. A train will leave tlie Gisborne railway station at 9.30 a.m., the return fare being, fixed at the modest sum of 2.s 2d. A programme which should provide a day’s capital sport has been arranged, and all who attend the picnic will find much toadmire and enjoy-. To facilitate the entraining of the crowd, trippers are requested to bring the exact amount of change for fares. The Muriwai sports,••too, are certain to attract a large number of people. The entries in tlie various events are exceptionally- good, and the handicaps make one anticipate good sport. Redstone’s brakes leave the Masonic Corner for tlie sporta at 8.30 a.m.
Bowlers will find their amusement in the tournament which is toHje held on the Turanganui green, and cricketers will find interesting the match Wanderers v. the Rest of Poverty Bay. v - ■ In the 1 evening townspeople will be well catered for by- tlie two picture shows, which announce special, attractions, and the P.B. R.C. dance will prove a joyous occasion for many. A social will be held at Te Karaka in the evening and a similar function at Mangapapa. At Tolago Bay the sports and the carnival which is to be opened to-day should provide ample entertainment. Following is the advertised railwaytime table for to-morrow : A train will leave Gisborne for Otoko at 8.30 a.m., Te Karaka depart 9.45 a.m., Otoko arrive 10.50 a.m., returning Otoko depart 5 p.m., Te Karaka depart 6.10 p.m., Gisborne arrive 7.20 p.m.
A train will leave Gisborne for Waikolm and Mahaki at 9.30 a.m., Te Karaka depart 10.-15 a.m., Waikohu depart 11.12 a.m., Mahaki arrive 11.22 a.m., returning leaving Mahaki at 4.25 p.m., Hutchinson’s Paddock depart 4.35 p.m., Waikohu depart 4.40 p.m., Te Karaka racecourse depart 5.5 p.m., To Karaka depart 5.15 p.m., Gisborne arrive 6.25 p.m. A train will leave Otoko for Gisborne at 8.35 a.m., Te Karaka depart 9.41 a.m., Gisborne arrive 10.50 a.m., returning leaving Gisborne at 4 p.m., Te Karaka depart 5.13 p.m., Otoko arrive 6.22 p.m.
These trains will stop- at intermediate stations and Te Karaka racecourse if required to pick up or set down passengers.
MURIWAI SPORTS
The- fol'owing handicaps have been declared for the Handicap Chop at the Muriwai sports to-morrow (New Year’s Day):—Wilson scr.j O’Rourke 4sec., Spellers Bse?, Blowes lOsec, Cate lOsee, Williams lOsec, . Munro l 12sec, Johnston 12sec, Nolan losec, Jackson 15 sec. Much interest attaches to this event, which should furnish a most exciting contest.
