General De Wet spoke from a manure heap, and said he preferred to be there with the people than on the most brilliant platform with foreigners. 1 Demonstrators proceeded to General Hertzog's house. General Hertzog, in a speech, apologised for his thoughtless references to Sir W. T. Smartt’s imperialism.
