THE NEW CABLE.
MESSAGES BEING' TRANSMITTED
[PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM] CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 31
On the last day of the old year the new cable between Auckland and Sydney was opened. The station at Doubtless Bay has been abandoned, as the new cable runs direct into the Auckland Post Office, where the company has special offices. On Tuesday Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes (Postmaster-General) was advised by the telegraph Engineer at Auckland that the Pacific cable work was' now going direct from that office, and that the company’s staff would return from Doubtless Bay on New Year’s Day. Everything, he said, was working satisfactorily under tlie tube system for relaying traffic to the o’d office. In connection with the opening Hon Mr Rhodes telegraphed to Air AYilward, manager, in the Pacific, for the Pacific Cable Board at Auckland, as follows: • “Please accept my congratulations on the successful opening of your new cable, which will still further draw the bonds of unity between the Southern dominions of the Empire and help tA bring them into closer association!? on points of material mterThe reply received from Air Milward was as follows: “Aluch gratified at receipt of your mesasge and pleased to be able to report that tlie new cables have done excellent work today. Am confident that when the staff is familiar with the new' conditions of transit times between Australia and New' Zealand will be reduced to an absolute minimum. Please accept mv best thanks for your.promise to be present at the luncheon m Auckland bn January 14 to celebrate the occasion.”
