THE TURF.

TE KARAKA RACING CLUB

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING

President, W. D. S. MacDonald, esq., M.P.; vice-presidents, Messrs L. C. Allen, J. A. Caesar;. E. F. Krause, A. M. Lewis ; stewards, Messrs D. J. Barry, F. Benson, M. Manuel, J. F. Pefctie, J. B. Poynter. R. Scott, H. Telford; judge, Mr W. D. S. MacDonald, M.P.; hnndicapper, M. C. J. Bennett; starter, Mr H. Moore ; clerk of scales, Mr G. Bell; clerk of course, Mr J. Pritchard jun. ; secretary and treasurer, Mr H. E. Dodd. The tenth annual meeting of the Te Karaka Racing Club was held on the club’s course at Te Karaka yesterday. Unfortunately the Scottish picnic clashed with the gathering, and therefore the attendance was not so large as last year; nevertheless, between 60.0 and 700 people were present, and the meeting will come out on the„right side of the ledger. Loud dissatisfaction was expressed on all sides at no opportunity being given the public to invest their money on the various events, and the matter of obtaining a totalisator permit and having justice done to Te Karaka in this respect was very forcibly brought under the notice of Mr W. D. S. MacDonald, M.P., who, it may be stated has already been working hard in connection with the matter. There are many who contend that this meeting is a special opportunity of'enjoying a day’s sport. Another argument advanced in this direction was that a very large number of people left Gisborne to lie present at the Auckland meeting, and a large amount of money, it is also claimed, left Poverty Bay to be invested in other parts, and this would not he the case if a totalisator permit was given to Te Karaka Club, which, if granted, would soon become one of the most popular country clubs in the Dominion. In the absence of Mr J. A. Caesar, Mr W. D. S. MacDonald kindly officiated as judge, and Mr Percy Andrew also rendered valuable assistance to the officials. As secretary, Mr H. E. Dodd was a host in himself, and there can be no doubt that he is the right man in the right place. No accident occurred to mar the meeting, and, although the fields were rather small, a good day’s sport was witnessed. Messrs Clare* and Son, of Gisborne, had charge_of the lunfheon booth and their catering ga vef general satisfaction: Following are the details of the racing:— FLYING HANDICAP, of 15 so vs; second horse to (receive 3 sovs from stake.
