Mrs. Morice. the victim of the motor mishap no - • Waikaremoana, was reported yesterday to- be progressing favorably. A London P.A. cable states that Canon Carnegie, of Birmingham, has succeeded Canon Hensley Henson at Westminster.

Mr H. W. Capper, Chief Postmaster at Timaru, retires on pension at the end of the month, after nearly 42 years’ service. He has been at Timaru since 1908.—P. A. Mr H. C. Rogers, until recently Inspector for the State 'Fire Insurance Department (savs a Christchurch P. A. wire) has taken over the managership of the State Fire Office in Canterbury in place of Mr F. J. G. Wilkinson, resigned.

Mr Sydney Hoben, formerly of Napier, is meeting with a considerable amount of success in Pasadena, California, where, according to a local paper, lie has a big programme of musical engagements for the coming season. He is a prominent figure on local concert platforms, and has played in recitals from Oregon to Mexico.

Mr Henri Pain was absent from the weighing room at the racecourse on Boxing Day (says the Westport “Times” and “Star”). He is fully entitled to retirement, as he lias weighed riders at the Westport races almost contimously for 44 years. He officiated at the first races held, in 1868, in a paddock on the town side of the Orawaiti River.

Wiring last night, the Invercargill agent of the .PA. said:—Hon. A. L. Herdman (Minister for Justice) arrived in Invercargill on Saturday, and visited the Bluff to-day.
