THE FERRY SERVICE HELD UP!
NO BOAT BETWEEN WELLINGTON AND LYTTELTON.
FIREMEN STILL UNAPPEASED.
A SERIOUS POSITION
[PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM] _ r WELLINGTON, Jan. 6. No boat left Wellington to-night in the Wellington-Lyttelton ferry service, the Maori’s firemen being disinclined still to resume work. The vessel was towed to-day to the Clyde Quay wharf and tied up. It lias not been decided yet whether the balance of her crew shall be paid off or no. The non-dispatch of the Te Anau was due to a shortage of stokers, several having signed off in the ordinary course as their time was up, and it was found impossible to replace them. Mr W. T. Young (secretary of the Seamen’s Union), interviewed, indicated that so long as no steamer was diverted from the ordinary run into the ferry service, the Union would not interfere, but if such a diversion was attempted, trouble might follow.
