THE CHESS CHAMPfONiSHIP. GYLES SUCCUMBS TO GRIERSON.. [PEESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM! NELSON, Jan. 6. •The first game of. the triangular match to decide the chess championship was played to-day between Grierson and Gyles. Grierson opened with the Queen’s Gambit, which Gyles declined. Gyles forced an early exchange and at a late-r move Grierson allowed Gyles to win a pawn, which Gyles immediately made a passed pawn. Grierson made an attack on Gyles’s king’s position with his queen and a knight • ">d Gyles, in meeting this, sacrificer’ a. pawn, thinking to win the knight, but- he did not follow his defence and was mated on the 23rd move.
Grierson meets Hicks to-morrow. Ihe tournament prize was presented at a social to-night.
