A BUTCHER’S BANKRUPTCY.
AiEETTXG OF CREDITORS.
The adjourned meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of Edmond Thomas Harries, of Gisborne, butcher, was held before the Official Assignee (Mr J. Coleman) yesterday. The bankrupt's statement showed that the assets totalled £146 andh'iabiiities (tw-o creditors) £238 18s. Mr H. Bright appeared on behalf of the Gisborne Meat Supply C’o., Ltd., and Mr F. AY. Xolan for Messrs Williams and Kettle, Ltd. Bankrupt was lepresented by Mr J. R. Kirk, j Bankrupt, in evidence, stated that he commenced business in Gisborne in May, 1905, as a butcher with a capital of £SO. two horses valued at £SO, and £3O lie drew from the Building Society. Lie had no other property. Hi-s wife owned some furnit:u and two sections—one in Gish') n.) and one at Alatawhero—and a c-otti i;o at tilt slaughter-yards. Sue acquired the properties out of what she saved prior to bankrupt entering into business on ills own account. He carried on business for five years. For a while he did well. In September, 1910, the Co-operative A feat Company purchased the business. Since then lie had been droving and doing odd jobs, and for 18 months acted as a buyer for the company. He earned then £3 a week. When lie sold out the business he was in debt, hut he could not say how much. He expected to he £2OO to the good. He owed Williams and Kettle. Ltd., £207, and F. Hall £7O. Mr Hall paid Williams and Kettle what bankrupt owed them. vThey were in partnership in the butchery business. Regarding Beavis’ account.’ through Williams and Kettle, of £250, bankrupt said be was not liable for that account. He told Mr Hall'he would look after it, but he had no interest in the business. Bankrupt- was to have 250 shares in the company, also a section at Awapuni. hut they got the latter hack. The claim of £3B 18s by the Meat 'Company was for law costs in connection with, the recent Supreme Court action. After selling out the business', wtiness was engaged by the comnany as a- purchaser at £3 a week. He had an interest in some cattle- purchased hv Air Hall.
Bankrupt was subjected to considerable cross-examination and tbe Assignee and Air Xolan were finally left to adjust the estate.
