A scheme for dealing with casual drunks, which has been operating for many years in America, and for five years in Victoria, has been, introduced at the. Central Police Court. Rev. Mr. Hammond and a missioner converse with likely men -in the courtyard., informing them that if they sign the pledge for not less than six months the Magistrate will be informed, and will probably not convict. The signatories are then visited at their own homes, and tho same week a letter of encouragement is sent. The experience of -Victoria shows that 25 per centum of the casual drunks sign-, whereof 80 keep tho pledge" or are not heard of again.
