A DESERVED PROMOTION.

SERGEANT HUTTON RAISED TO THE RANK OF SENIORSERGEANT.

Official advice was received by Sergeant D. D. Hutton last evening that he had been promoted to the rank of Senior-Sergeant, as from Saturday next, February 1. This intimation will be read with approval by all sections of the community, for the Sergeant has, during his term of office in this district, earned general esteem and trust. .Ho has performed his duties impartially and straightforwardly, and in a manner which has given the greatest satisfaction to all concerned. Sergeant Hutton is a much-experienced officer, who has held positions in several branches of the Service, while he has gained distinction on more than a few occasions. In addition, the Sergeant has refused a Humane Society decoration for a feat of bravery; Sergeant Hutton joined the old Artillery Forces in 1887, at AAmllington, where he was stationed up.to the time of the Te Kooti raids, after which he was transferred to Lyttelton, where he was with the Force there. Eventually, he was transferred to the Police Force and sworn in in March, 1890. The following week he was shifted to AA 7 el!ington and did duty there for 64 years, doing both uniform and plain clothes work and a large amount of relieving work all over the AVellington district. Later he was stationed at Johnsonville.and remained there for ten years, being instrumental in detecting the notorious character Allandale, who was sentenced for a long list of burglaries. Sergeant (then Constable) Hutton received Ins “first grade” under the. police promotion scheme then in force. On the Ist of March, 1596, the tank of Sergeant was awarded to Constable Hutton, and he was transferred to the Mount Cook Station,, AA r ellington. ’From Wellington SergJant Hutton was selected to conic to Gisborne, where he has had charge of the district station for five years.
