NEW TURKISH PREMIER COR-
NERED.
“PEACE IF EUROPE MAKES IT
POSSIBLE.”
PORTE DOES NOT INTEND TO
DEFY EUROPE
[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION COPYRIGHT] (Received Jan. 29, 9.45 p.m.) t LONDON, Jan. 29. M. Novakovitch s will present the Allies’ Note to Rescind Pasha today. It states that the absence of fresh proposals and recent events at Constantinople make Turkey’s silence significant, and the delegates therefore place on record the rupture of negotiations. The Note does not mention the termination of the Armistice. The Allies thank the King and the Government for their hospitality. Tlie “Telegraph’s” Constantinople correspondent had an interview witli Chevket.
After outlining optimistically tlie Government’s programme of administrative reforms, tlie new Premier was cornered on the question, a-s to whether it was to be peace or war. He declared that it would be peace if Europe would make peace possible. They did not intend to defy Europe or to reply to her advice by bluster, and did not want to draw the sword unless the alternative wore reprobation of Mussulman opinion.
