GORDON’S PRAYER MAT.
A gift of extraordinary interest, received by Bishop Wynne from one of General Gordon’s family, lias just been brought to Khartoum. It is the “Prayer Mat” used by Gordon when Governor in the Soudan from 1875 to 1879. It is a piece of woollen needlework about a yard long and eighteen inches' wide, and is the thing a devout Moslem would always carry with him to kneel on when praying. Gordon adopted the same idea for his own use. In a country where one may lie frequently camping in the open or at unfurnished “rest-houses” on the road, and where carpets are often not used,on the mud or stone floors of even the more pretentious houses in tlie> towns; such».a “Prayer Mat” is even now an obvious necessity to any one who. is in the habit of praying regularly. The mat has been placed on the present in the Gordon Memorial Chapel in the cathedral here as a “kneeler” in the sanctuary, and this will probably be its permanent place, so that it will not become a mere show-piece for sightseers, but will be continually in use for its original purpose.
