HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.
COMPULSORY DRILL. SUB-DIVISION OF TE MAR UNO A. The ordinary meeting of the Gisborne High Senooi Board was held in Mr Nolan’s office yesterday afternoon. Present : Messrs J. AY. Nolan (chairman), J. R. Kirk, A. F. Matthews, E. H. Maun, and AAL Morgan, secretary. Air I' 1 . Foote (the Principal) was also present. A letter was received from the Rev. E. Ward asking for a small grant towards his son’s travelling expenses. The Board decided that it was unable to accede to the request-. A letter was read from Mrs A. Hosier, objecting to her daughter being taught cookery, on the ground that ■'it- is a waste of time and money. - ’ Mr Kirk said it should he pointed out to the parents that the Board was firmly of opinion that cookery must be taken by all girls. The Secretary raised the question of an examination, so. that girls could obtain a certificate. It was eventually resolved that candidates might sit at Gisborne for the City of London Guilds examination, and that the Board would pay the fees of the candidates. On behalf of the Master Plumbers. Mr C. S. Allen wrote offering two prizes for the Technical School—one for the ,boy showing best improvement and one for the best attendant at the plumbing class. From Dr Anderson (assistant In-spector-General) a letter was received to the effect that if a boy did not do his military training he would lose his fieo place. Mr Kirk proposed that the Board approve of the principle suggested in the letter. Mr Matthews: lam against it. AA’e are asking too much from the Ik>vs. I am absolutely against it. I think the Defence Department are poking their noses into places where they are not wanted. Mr Mann seconded Mr Kirk’s motion. which was adopted. Mr Ivirk requested that the drill being largely physical exercise it must be for the benefit of tile lads.
Mr T. Grant presented a report on the sub-division of To Marunga Endowment BIOCIS Mr Kirk thought that they, as owner#! of the block ought to go over it before they decided anything. Mr Mann preferred to be guided by an expert, as Mr Grant. Mr Kirk argued that the Board ought to see the site and then be guided by Mr Grant®on the spot. Mr Mann had the strongest possible objection to going up. It would be a waste of time. Mr Matthews said that lie had been waiting for the report, and lie intended visiting the block. On bis return lie would be pleased to confer with Mr Grant. It was agreed to defer the matter until Mr Matthews’ return.
