THE GREAT HUI.
BIG INFLUX OF VISITORS. PREPARATIONS FOR TO-MOR-ROW PRACTICALLY COMPLETE.
The population of the marae at Manutuko jumped up about 300 yesterday, when the Natives who arrived in Gisborne from the East Coast districts by the Ripple and Mokoia on Saturday and Sunday “invaded the courtyard” as they term it, after -a week-end spent amid the unaccustomed delights of town life. All day yesterday brakes and drags and carts' were busily employed in taking the visitors out to the hui and in conveying other Maoris back and forth, and in the evening the usual ceremonial dances and speeches welcomed the new arrivals, who form part of the Ngatipuru tribe. The hui will be officially opened tomorrow, when the Minister (Hon. W. H. Herries) is due to arrive about 11 a.m. It is probable, also, that Mr Justice Cooper will attend the hui tomorrow or on Thursday. In the meantime the gathering is attracting not a little attention at the hands of Europeans, a considerable number of whom visited the hui yesterday.
