AN ILLEGITIMATE GRANDCHILD.
A NOVEL POINT AS TO MAINTENANCE. 1 [PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM! INVERCARGILL, Mar. 6. A case presenting unusual features came before Mr Cruikshanks, S.M., in which Fred R. Bowden was sued by the police for the maintenance Of a child named Cyril Bowden, now in an industrial school. It appears that Bowden married a woman who had an illegitimate daughter, who is now 22 years old. This girl in turn had an illegitimate child, for whose maintenance Bowden was now being sued. The Magistrate said that under one part of the Destitute Persons’ Act the defendant was the parent of Cyril Bowden’s mother. If lie had been the father of Cyril Bmtden’s mother he would have been liable. But it did not follow that because he was the parent that lie was also the father. The Act could not be extended to include the illegitimate children of his wife’s illegitimate children. The complaint was therefore dismissed. THANKFUL FOR LIFE. The late Dr. Kitchin, Dean of Durham and Chancellor of Durham University, who left estate of £5415 gross value, closed his will with the following requests:— "Let no one make any memoir or biography of me. May my funeral be as simple as possible," without flowers or any show; a few wild flowers might be scattered over my grave. Let my burial be is little mournful as possiblethe ear hly end of a noor sinner who died ; hankful to the Almighty God for a long and very happy life.” £lB REWARD FOR £l2 LOSS. Marcel Gillet, a 10-year-old boy, picked up a purse containing £l2 a few days ago in Paris, and though his mother is a widow in very poor circumstances he took the purse to the nearest police st‘tion. The story of his honesty was related in the "Fig' l o,” with the .result that £lB has i ’en subscribed and handed to Marcels’ mother. The little boy himself received a box of paints.
