BLUEJACKETS ACCEPT A CHALLENGE.
WILD SCENES IN A CIRCES. A wild scene, created by bluejackets because it was urged that one of their number in the ring had beaten a wrestling champion, occurred at the Lisbon Coliseum circus. -V man who claims the championship of the world at “glima” (Danish wrestling) has .lately been appearing in Paris. London, Berlin, and New York, and he offered £4O to anyone who should throw him or wound him with a knife or dagger. After defeating Portuguese ana French wrestlers he agreed to meet a Portuguese bluejacket, in the service of the Alinister of Alarine as orderly, and the sailor, entering the ring, leaped at a single bound upon the Dane, striking him on the right hand and then on the chest, and wounding him somewhat badly. Thereupon an uproar occurred, and threatened to develop into a serious riot. The management demurred to paying the money. About 2CO friends of'the victorious sailor jumped into the arena menacingly, demanding payment, and producing revolvers. The spectators were horrified, and the officer in charge of the police advised the manager to pay the money. Finally, as there was danger of the circus being destroyed,- the director tossed a bundle of notes into the ring and the tar was borne out on the shoulders of his friends, waving tlie money in the air l as he went. '1 he police force was powerless to have dealt with a riot.
