DAIRY PRODUCE. IN LONDON. '* / —r / ': - Under date London, February 21, Messrs AVcddel and Co., Ltd., report: Butter.—The cold weather experienced this week lias put tone into tho market, and the demand for all qualities of Australian butter has improved though the inquiry is strongest for very best qualities. Like last week, the demand for unsalted is greater than for salted ; but strictly “choicest” quality of salted also meets an excellent inquiry. “Choicest” Victorian, New South Wales and Queensland salted butters are making from loßs to 112 s per cwt. Second grade salted of tho above varieties is making from 102 s to 108 s, of which quality there is a large supply. New Zealand “choicest” salted brings 114 s to 118 s per cwt., and second grade 108 s to 112 s. Unsalted butter of all the above kinds still maintains a premium of 2s to 4s over salted, and if the unsalted be also without preservative it finds a specially strong market on the Continent, where 122 s has been paid for this variety. Arrivals this week consist of 45,682 boxes from Australia, against 45,174 boxes for the corresponding week in 1912. The arrivals of Australasian butter for the year ended January were 20,900 tons less than the previous twelve months, each of which show a shortage. Shipments this week advised by cable arc 39,300 from Australia. The improvement in the market for Australina and New Zealand oqually affects the Foreign butters in our own markets, and the Danish official quotation has been raised by 2 kronor to 111, against 113 last year at this date. Cheese.—There is a better tone in this market. The stock of Canadian in London is only 56,000 boxes, which is the smallest by 19,000 boxes at tin’s date for the previous six years, and 31,000 below the average at this period. It is reported that the proportion of really choice Canadian in London is small. New Zealand arrivals are clearly satisfactorily, and there are no signs of accumulation taking place. Prices of Canadian are G3s to Cos for ordinary quality, strictly choicest being Is more. New Zealand has'been raised 6d to Is this week, and 60s to 61s per cwt. is now the price for both white and colored.
THE PRICE OF SUGAR
[PE ESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM] CHRISTCHURCH, April 1. It is understood that the increase in the price of sugar announced locally from 2]d to 2id per lb is due to action by the Colonial Sugar and Refining Company as the result of recent cases under the Commercial Trusts Act. Without going into legal aspects of the matter, an appeal has been lodged Court in the cases referred to and is against the judgment of the Supreme to be heard on 14th inst. It appears tln\t the Company lias notified its clients that the discount of 5 per cent-, hitherto allowed to cover tho cost of distribution and so forth and representing *abbut £1 per ton is to be discontinued as from April Ist and that the price of sugar will be as listed. Although the Company has not altered its price to merchants, sugar is now costing merchants approximately £1 per ton more than it did. when the company gave tho 5 tion made locally about two montlrs ago it is claimed that it was not quite justified as at 2]d per lb the margin of,profit to the grocer was null thatsugar hardly paid for its handling, per cent discount. As to tho redneand was not bearing its proper proportion of the general expenses of business. BLOOD STOCK SALES. [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPf RIHIT , (Received April 1, 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 1.
