THE GAMING ACT.
A PECULIAR CASE. [press association telegram.] FEILDING, April 2. . A peculiar case was decided by Air. J W Poynton, S.M., at the Alagistrate’s Court this morning. Two secretaries of a recent garden fete Held to raise funds for the Beautifyino- Society were proceeded against for a "breach of tha Gaming Act, as instituting a free trip to Rotorua, disposed of by the drawing of tickets'of admission to the fete. A plea of guilty was entered It was r pointed ou t by the del endants’ soheitor that the-*men- had no personal gain. The same thing was practised in other places. The Alagistrate said he quite accepted" the statement that there was no personal gain. - The men acted quite innocently, but there was a breach of the Act, and the police were right to bring the case. A fine of 10s with 7s costs Was imposed in each case.
