BABIES AS BRIDES.

STRANGE MARRIAGE CUSTOMS IN THE EASTERN WORLD.

Babj brides and bridegrooms were numerous among the 400 couples whoso weddings were celebrated simultaneously the other day at Surat among members of the Lcwa Kunbi caste.

None of the brides, says a telegram from Bombay, was over twelve years of age, the majority being from one to seven years old. The bridegrooms ranged from three to nine. Most ol tho contracting parties sat or lay on the laps of their parents during the ceremony and were given sweets to keep-them quiet. The caste only celebrates weddings every ten or twelve years.

In Chinese Turkestan the practice exists of writing out a bill of divorce at the same time that a marriage is celebrated; thus marriages often last for a day only, said Miss E. G. Kemp, describing her travels across Central Asia at Caxton Hall, Westminster.
