NOT SETTLED YET!
SERIOUS POSITION OF N.S.W STRIKES.
RAILWAY GOODS TRAFFIC practically stopped.
EFFORTS TO ENSURE SETTLE-
MENT CONTINUE.
OUTLOOK VERY UNCERTAIN
[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.’;
SYDNEY, April 7. The strike position at tho Barrier is daily becoming moie .stringent and complicated. Broken Hill is practically in a state of siege. Tho Tramway Company decline to accede to the demands of tho Labor Federation. The latter has ignored tho company’s request to be allowed to run trains to and from Cockburn, carrying foodstuffs, passengers, and mails only, so as to avoid public inconvenience.
Tho only public means of communication is by motor ears. The arrival of teams somewhat relieved tho position as far ns food supplies aro concerned. The houses of tramway officials are closely picketed, and domestics who aro members of the union have withdrawn from them.
A serious development is tho stoppage of tlie municipal sanitary service.
At a big mass meeting of unionists speeches were made indicating a strong determination not to tolerate nonunionists.
Besides those already mentioned other'mines aro preparing to close. Unless tho train service, enabling tho obtaining of supplies and sending away of ores, is quickly restored, work along the whole line of lode will be stopped.
