An interested spectator at the official inspection of the storage battery cars in Gisborne yesterday was Mr r William .Maxwell, of Invercargill, a representative of the Invercargill Cycle and Motor Company, who made the journey from Napier yesterday specially to .set', how the new cars would shape. in conversation with a “Times’’ reporter alter the trials, Air Maxwell l stated that he had for years past been 7* convinced that the Edison storage battery cars were the coming success «.< the* future, and lie had advocated their adoption in and out ot season. He had done his lest to induce the Invercargill borough Council to adept the system, hut without success, as they had gone in for the overhead system with a. steam-generated power. It had cost them £9O,(XX) to lay clown ia 9-inile service, and lie was convinced that they would lose £4OOO a year on it. “Vou have done the wise tiling here,” proceeded Mr Maxwell, “in going in for the storage battery system. I am on my way now to America to look thoroughly into the system in America, ami I was anxious to sec. a test before leaving New Zealand. 1 intend leaving .Sydney by the s.s. Runic on May 7, and will he able to tell the makers of your cars how they performed under the Government inspection.” Mr Maxwell went on to say that he was convinced that the storage battery system would soon supersede every other for road traction. When once .-die cars were perfected to allow of iup; that would spoil the ond of potiol and oil engine.
