‘ THE NEEDS OF EDUCATION. Friday’s Auckland “Star” Ims the following:— The educational sub-committee of the Auckland Exliibtion met for the first time yesterday afternoon. Mr. George Elliot presided, and other members present were: Messrs. G. J. Garland, J. W. Tibbs, H. A. E. Millies, land Dr. McDowell. The chairman explained that a good deal c;f the wind had been taken out of the committee’s sails by the ladies’ home industries sub-committee, which had decided to invite the principals of all schools in the province to give their pupils facilities for sending in competitive exhibits of plain and fancy sewing, drawing, painting, modelling, handwriting, plumbing, carpentry, etc. Mr. Garland suggested that, in view of the fact that there were some 214 school gardens in the Auckland education district, it would be advisable to include flowers and vegetables in the exhibits. The secretary (Mr. W. R, Holmes) observed that there would lie a difficulty in housing all the exhibits if this were done, and, in any case, provision would lie made for school and children’s exhibits at the numerous horticultural shows that it was intended to hold.
It was suggested that some of tho leading educational publishers and others at Homo might 'bo prevailed upon to exhibit books and educational apparatus, and it was decided to interview the. Acting-Minister for Education this week with the object of inducing the Education Department to take space in the Exhibition sufficient for an educational section.
