GISBORNE TRAMWAYS.

A BUSY BAY ON SATURDAY. CLOSE ON 3000 PASSENGERS CARRIED. TEN-MINUTE SERVICE TO BE STARTED TO-DAY. As anticipated, the newly-started ■Gisborne tramway service had a busy -day on Saturday. From an early hour in the morning the tnams were well patronised, while from 11 o’clock until noon both were kept going at top pressure. From 2t05 in the afternoon business was particularly brisk, and between 6.45 and 8 in the evening standing room only was the orclei'.

The snug cars- proved a welcome refuge from the driving- rain that fell for the greater part of the day, and housewives found tho new experience of travelling down town in comfort to do their shopping a pleasant advantage.

The cars were given a good test on Saturday,- as owing to the -heavy demand for town lighting it was impossible to recharge the cars after o o’clock. It was intended to give the ears a “boost” in tho morning, but owing to tho rush of business it was found impossible to spare the time. No. 1 car ran throughout the day without having a recharge at all, and was going as well as ever at knocking off time at 11 p.m. During the day 1710 penny tickets ‘were sold and 1251 two-penny tickets, making the total number of passengers carried 2961. Tie receipts totalled £l7'lls 3d. No. 1 car travelled 75 miles and No. 2 car 78 miles, making the full distances travelled 153 miles. The number of passengers carried per car mile worked out at 27.6, which must be considerd most -satisfactory, as the average at Wellington stands at 14.6.

Motornian Crosse acted as “flying conductor” on Saturday, picking up the cars at Grey Street: His takings for the day totalled £1 9s lid. The total takings up to Saturday night totalled £42 11s 2d, and the passengers carried to date number 714-5.

A ten-minute service will be inaugurated to-day between the hours of 7 to 9, 12 to 2, 4.30 to 6.15, and 7.15 to 8.15. Both cars’ will as usual be put on after the pictures, and one will he sent back to pick up stragglers, Tke usual 20-minute service will be maintained outside the hours mentioned.
