A PLEA FOR MR. SHERIDAN.

fFo the Editor.) .Sir,— Aa a young burgess of tlio toyfti, I wish to express my approval of Mr, John. Sheridan's candidature

for the Mayoral chair. I, have, pome into personal contact with liim j besides watching His career as a business man very closely, and I have come to the conclusion that of all the persons presenting themselves for tile honor, lie is the best, and in support of that I need only state that lie lias worked himself up the ladder by sheer ability, and I think no one, not even his opponents, will deny him the honor of being one of the smartest business mon there has ever been in Poverty Bay, and one of tho shrewdest of financiers. I am of opinion that the latter qualification is what we want most of all in the Mayor to be. Moreover, Sir, he is possessed of Large interests in the borough—'Which is more than can bo said of some—and has been for many a year in our midst. I don’t see why we should support mon who have been tried and found wanting. . Evidently one found it too strenuous, and the other lias not shown himself qualified for the honor and dignity of the office. Knowing the complicated and bewildering state of tho borough affairs I do not see liow a man even of great ability—far less mediocre—could undertake to get them on a good footing doing an hour a day. I should fancy lie would not bo finished by the time the next election came round. Therefore, when a man of the calibre of Mr. J. Sheridan comes along and offers his services, I consider no voter could do better than make sure, by diligence and hard work, of ensuring ids return. —I am, etc., ELECTOR.
