A COMPLICATED CLAIM.
\£AT. versus JIAIX
The machinery of the Magistrate’s Court was invoked for some four hours during the bustle of the election yesterday to settle a dispute between Charles Neal, storekeeper, of Matawai (Mr T. Alston Coleman) and Edward Bain, also a- storekeeper, of Matawai (Mr Etherington). Mr. Yv. A. Barton, S.M., was on the Benclu The original claim was for £l7 13s lid, the balance of a goods account and money lent, this claim being admitted by plaintiff. Plaintiff, however, put in a counterclaim for £l7 Is —hire of a horse £l2; meals paid for while carrying £3 6s: one day’s labor at Matawai 15s; value of sundry articles left in Neal’s charge £l.
A large amount of evidence was heard, and His Worship gave judgment for £l7 10s lid on the original claim less £1 15s allowance to Bain for meals while travelling, which reduced the judgment to £ls 15s lid, with Court costs (£1 6s), witnesses’ expenses (15s 4d), cost of adjournment from Te Karaka, judgment being entered for defendant in regard to the balance of the counter claim. Boiled down, as Mr Coleman put it, judgment was given against Bain for £l6 18s 3d.
