LIABILITY FOR SERVICE
THE PROGRESS OF REGISTRATION. *■ The period for registration of those liable for training under tho Detente -Vet 1909. and its amendments, closes on May 81st, and tho necessary notices are posted, or are about to be posted, in the whole of the Government Post odices throughout the district. Those liable for registration, are those not already registered, and are, on May 31, between 14 and 23 years of age; ill] boys attending any secondary school who are II on May 31,sclvool authorities to take the registrations if required. Th< : > notice proceeds;— “The undermentioned persons must also register :—(<:) All male persons liable under paragraph (a) who through temporary absence from Ntuv Zealand have not previously registered must do so within two months of their return, (cl) All male immigrants between the ages of 14 and 23 (that i-, who were under 21. on the 31st Mai on, 1911) must register within six months after arrival in New Zealand, (e) Ah male persons from 14 to 23 years <4. ago on changing residence from an exempted to a non-exempted area must register within 30 days of such change. All persons liable must fill in a pro-, scribed form ni registration in respect of military training under the Defence Acts, and must post or deliver same to the Area Sergeant-Major of the Territorial area in which the applicant for registration resides. Firms of registration may be obtained at any military office, post, or police office. Any person to whom this notice applies who fails to take any strp_nc rssat’y to secure his registration as aforesaid is liable to a fine of £5, and may be deprived of civil fights h r any period not exceeding ten years. Any person go.deprived of civil rights sthall during the period of deprivation be incapable of being appointed to any office or employment, whether prmanent or temporary, in the Public Service, and shall not be entitled to be or remain registered on any elect on! roll under the Legislature Act, 1908. No such deprivation of civil rights shall affe-t tiiie obligation of the offender to render personal service under the Defence Act, ami the Act shall continue to apply to him in all respects as if no such order of dep; ivaliou had been made.”
Lieut. Bishop informed a “Times” reporter that the registration was proceeding steadily, the returns being quite satisfactory, to date. The following facts, as related by tile officer, will be of interest:—Eighty boys attending school have registered so far, the total registration from this sour o last year being 10. Passing from the senior cadets into the Territorials this year, we will have, exclusive of outlying districts, sixty lads avaFable. Their places will bet filled from last year’s and this ./ear’s registration, the number -so far being 50. Last year there were 112 cadet", and 119 passed over into the Territorial forces. With the country figures, the average throughout will be about the same as last year.
