NOTES. The Takapuna, which sailed for Napier last evening, is due to return from that port to-morrow morning. The Maitai arrived from the North late yesterday afternoon, and after discharge of her cargo, sailed in continuation of her voyage for the South. The Mokoia. 'whioli is a day late on her northward run, is due to arrive in tho early hours this morning, and will be tendered by one launch at 6 o’clock. ' The Squall is due from the Coast at the end of this week. The Indrabarali was delayed In her loading operations by the heavy sea on Tuesday night, but is expected to get away to-day for Wanganui. Tho cargo overearried by the Mouowai at the beginning of the week was brought baok by the Takapuna yesterday. The following have booked passages by the Mokoia. leaving for Auckland this morning: Mr and Mrs Biddles; Misses Adeane, Gray, Edwards, and T. Meyer: Mrs McLeod and child; Messrs B. Brown. P. D. Bussell, Rowland, Bach, and Raulmson. It seems from reports issued all over the- world recently that what the Union Company has done in regard to the training of officers for the steamers of tho “Red Funnel" fleet—i.e., discontinue the use of a sailer as a school ship in favor of a steamer, will be the general practice ere long. The Sydney “Shipping List” regrets the apparent universal intention to abolish tho sailer as a school for the future officers on the ground that it must be admitted that the wind-jammer is really the starting-point; and even if only one or two years is spent on them, that experience is found most useful. Mr M. Muirhead, late third of the Pateena, has joined the. Mokoia as third officer, and Mr A. Rathbone has joined the Pateena.
Mr Aveling, late third officer of the Mokoia, has been appointed second officer of the Wanaka. Mr Brennan, third of the Flora, lias transferred to the Karamu, and Mr Peters. fourth of the Mokoia. is now third on the Flora. Mr 11. C. Williamson, assistant purser of the Moeraki, and Mr S. .Tories, assistant purser of the Maori, exchanged positions at Lyttelton <yn Thursday. Mr W. Ifnox, second engineer o f the Wiminera, went ashore at Sydney last week. Mr S. R. Collier has been promoted to second. Messrs R. Murray and A. K< udell have joined the Wiminera as third and fourth engineers respectively.
