POLICE FORCE STILL INADEQUATE.
On the motion of Mr S. S. Dean at yesterday’s meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, it was decided to write to the Comm ; 3i*. *ner of I once, •hanking him for what nr.d Gun doio in the way of strengthening the Police force in the district; but pointing out that the force was still inadequate, and that in the Chamber’s opinion more men are required to properly police this district. Mr Toneycliffe: .Why can’t we get some of the short-service prisoners to do some beautifying work about the town, as is done in other places. Mr Barry supported this view', limy had a gaol here, and he did not sec whv the prisoners should be sent out of the district. TFie town should have the benefit of their work.
