FARMERS IN CONFERENCE.

AUCKLAND PROVINCE. [press association telegram.] AUCKLAND, May 22. Tho provincial conference af tho Farmers’ Union opened to-day. The following remit was adopted : “That this conference Is of opinion that tho only satisfactory solution of the problem of the construction and maintenance of main arterial roads is for tho Government to undertake tho work, and suggest that part of Crown land revenue should be made available for this purpose.” An address was given by Mr. Edwin Hall on railway matters, and a remit was adopted:— “That this conferences urges the Government to adopt a progressive policy for tho development of the system of light railways and, in cases where the Government cannot undertake their construction, to af- .... ford facilities for the work being undertaken by private enterprise - on the lines or the Belgian system. The present system of charging extra rail freights oil certain classes of imported goods was dealt withand tho following remit was adopted.: “That the present system of charging extra rail freights on certain classes of _ imported goods is very unfair to inland settlers, and should be abolished.. ’ ’ Dealing with the land tax Captain Col beck moved the following remit: “That this conference is of opinion that tho Land Tax, a.s compared . with the Income Tax, is acting very unfairly on the farming community, and that the system requires altering so that they would be an equal burden on all Capital, whether invested in land or any other class of investment.” Mr. MakGili said it should bo made clear that farmers aro not in favor of the aggregation of lands, and at his suggestion tho remit opened with the following sentence: “While in no way wishing to remove tho restrictions framed to prevent the unduo aggregation of land,” liiits remedied form the remit was adopted. . Other resolutions were discussed and adopted, including ono in favor of tho better control of the sale of New Zealand products on Homo markets.
