The Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s Winter show opened today in fine weather, and there was a splendid attendance. The entries in cheese were somewhat smaller than usual, but the quality was excellent, the judges describing the exhibition as one of the finest ever held here, and one which would hold its own in any centre. There is a remarkable degree of uniformity in the body and texture in practically every exhibit. The judges awarded the' maximum p'oints for get-up and finish. The competition in creamery butter was very keen, and, in many cases, the judges had great difficulty in arriving at a decision. The officialopening was performedby Hon. H. D. Bell, who, referring to the opening for our products in the markets of the world, said that only, the other day ho was talking to the greatest of London meat-sellers, who told him that they fully anticipated the opening of Continental markets to the meat- of this country. He believed, also, that there was great hope for the flax industry.
After referring to increasing exports of dairy produce to Canada and South Africa, Mr. Bell said the value of dairy produce (butter and cheese) exported from New Zealand during the past year had exceeded by half a million the value of the dairy" produce exported during the preceding- year. The entries totalled 1297, as against 1393 last year, the falling-off being chiefly in grain, roots, and cheese, the bad season affecting the growth of grain and roots, while tlie shortage of cheese is due primarily to the fact that a considerable number of factories did not forward exhibits. Tlie takings to-day totalled £333, as against £167 on the first day last year.
