THE ASHBURTON DROWNING
FATALITY

The old man found, drowned yesterday afternoon has been identified as Edward Jones, aged about 82 years. He was a stranger to Ashburton, and was staying at a boardinghouse. He arrived from Christchurch on May 23. On "Sunday morning he left the boardinghouse for a walk, but dki not return. He had a savings bank account of £100; The police are trying to ascertain if he had any relatives in the Dominion.
A SAD FATALITY
HOKITIKA,. June A sad fatality occurred at Ivoka-t-ahi to-clay when Thomas Moynihan, a farmer and a recent arrival in the district, was killed while engaged cutting lip a big pine tree. It appears that deceased was with two of his sons at the time and he was working at the butt of the tree while they were engaged in sawing off the limbs. By some means the trunk, whicli was propped up by the limbs, without any warning rolled over, pinning the unfortunate man to the ground. It was found necessary to dig the ground from under him in order to extricate him. and when this was done it was found that lire was extinct.
An inquest was held this evening, and a verdict was returned; that deceased was accidentally killed by a log rolling upon him. Moynihau leaves a widow and a family of nine.
STRUCK BY AN ENGINE
DUNEDIN, June 3. Maurice Flahim, a resident of Milton. was fatally injured at Wingatui this evening. He had 1 just left the racecourse siding and _ had proceeded to walk towards Mosgiel on the main line when the second express from Dunedin, to Invercargill came behind him, He failed to take notice of warning whistles and was struck by the train and instantaneously killed-.
TIMARU MOTOR ACCIDENT.
TIMARU, June 3.
There have been several motor accidents lately. On Saturday night in the dimness between two street lights .a car ran over an old man lying in the middle of the road. He was said to be intoxicated. He was not seriously hurt.
To-day a car collided with a horse at Par bora, breaking two legs. The animal was shot.
