The Engineer reported: The work at Waiapu Bridge is making good progress, and absout half the total number of ferro concrete piles have been driven. Two piers are completed to Corbett’s, and another is carried up about half-way. In addition to this the greater part of the superstructure is ready for placing when the piers .are completed. Mr. Gilmore, the overseer, has considered it advisable to order extra driving beyond that specified in some cases. Of this 1 quite approve, as it is of the greatest importance that the foundation should be as solid as possible. I inspected the road leading to the company’s shed at Port Awanui. The big storm about six weeks ago did considerable damage, and I think it necessary to build a concrete wall about one chain long and about three chains of boulders and wire netting along the front to prevent further damage, and allow the road to be put in condition for the winter. The pegging and levels for the road from Kopukoko to Makarika have been completed ,_ but the office work is not quite finished. I have made a survey of the deviation of the road at Mateomako. The area cut off from Makomako would be 57 acres 2 roods 14 perches. Mr. McCracken reports that the work required at the Hikuwai bridges lias been completed.
Councillor Kemp was appointed to interview Mr. Graham, manager of Makomako, in regard to the valuation of land. The overseer’s report was read and considered. Arising therefrom, it was proposed by the Chairman and seconded by Cr. Kamp that r.o payments be allowed for carting graders. It was decided that- Mr. NcNamara be instructed to clean up the gravel pit and that all timber for huts at Waiau, Tokomaru, Mata Bridge, Manutahi. Mokonui, and Makomako be delivered at once, and a satisfactory design for building the huts be prepared and that inquiries he made as to whether the Farmers’ CoOperative Association, Tokomaru, will sell or lease their driving paddock. If not, the Engineer is to -look out for a suitable section for a liut.. The Council then went into committee to deal with tenders, and on resuming it- was decided that the tender of Mr. Brown be accepted for contract 10-3.
ORDINARY BUSINESS
. I: was decided that Messrs Williamson and Mathias be written to and asked whether they will complete the Groves contract. It- was decided that tenders be called for metalling the road between the Rost Office and the foot of the hill by the hospital at- Te Araroa. * Regarding surface work at Tapuwairoa Road, the overseer stated that lie had made arrangements with Mr Hicks to do the work.
Or. Kemp reported that a waterhole on the Tokomaru-Mata Road wanted repairing.—The overseer was instructed to see into the matter.
It was proposed by Cr. Wicksteed and seconded by Cr. Ivemp that the chairman and engineer go over the route of the proposed deviation at Takapau and see what is required to be done, so that tenders may be called by next meeting. It was proposed by Cr. Oates and seconded bv Cr. Murphy that the resolution passed at the meeting of the Council on January 6 last with reference to the proportions of the cost of the Mangahawini Bridge to bo charged to various accounts, be rescinded and that the following resolution be substituted: “That the bridge over the Mangahawini stream at Tokomaru be built and the cost of same charged to the several accounts as follows, cost of approaches and metalling paid for out of loan money; actual cost of bridge • charged against the County road and Tokomaru Riding in equal proportions.” It was decided that the acting-chair-man and clerk sign, and the common seal be affixed to eleven debentures for the Waiapu main road and bridg lean.
Accounts were passed for payment totalling £4517. '
