FORTHCOMING RETIREMENTS
[PEESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM! WELLINGTON, June 4A number of officers of the Public Service will shortly be retired, either owing to length of! service, or under the age limit of 65 years. Intimation to this effect has been conveyed to the heads of the departments in which such offieers are engaged, but the names will not be available for publication until those who are to be retired have been duly notified. It is. understood that the nrovisions of the Act will be strictly complied with by the Public Service Commissioners. The officers affected are to bo given six months’ notice—that is they will cease duty on 30th September, after which tliev will have three months’ leave of absence on full pay, as provided by the Act. Those who are retiring include a number of officers high up in. the service and in such cases the pensions which they will receive will be substantial. In other instances, however, where the pay is small and the men joined the service at an advanced age, an effort will it is stated, be made to get Parliamentary authority for a contribution to be mado from ■ the Consolidated Revenue towards such pensions—in fact, it is suggested that there will be a pension minimum. The retirement "of officers occupying prominent positions will, of course, mean promotion all round in some departments. Among those who have already been notified of their retirement are Mr Amelins Smith, secretary of the Superannuation Board, and Mr I). R. Purdy, “second clerk of the income branch of the Tax Department.
