LICENSING COMMITTEE.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Gibbon.e Licensing Committe was held yrsiorday, commencing at noon, there be ng present Messrs A. Dewing, D. Hepburn, *M. McLeod and J. Someryel. In the abseice of Mr W. A. Barton, H.ivl., Mr Dewing* was chosen as chairman. Sen.-Sergeant Hutton represented the police and presented the following report, dated May 1: “I resepctfully report that the hotels in the Borough of Gisborne hare been well conducted during the year and the upkeep of,each establishment is excellent, several improvements being made in some houses, at their own initiation. Most of the outhouses ere already connected with the new sewerage and all of them will no doubt be connected bv the date of the annual meeting. I'his will'be a marked improvement and .more healthy, especially where backyard areas are limited. ‘‘During the year there was an inincrease in the convictions for drunkenness on the previous year.’’ Constable Maloney reported satisfactorily on the Patutahi Sub-district, and Constable Tarr on Wairoa. Not one hotel, town or country, was adversely reported on. Sen.-Sergeant Hutton said he would like to point out that the country hotels were remarkable for their cleanliness, probably better than any other district in New Zealand. Dr Chesson forwarded a resolution carried by the recent conference, “that it be a recommendation to Licensing Committees that the periodical cleansing of bottles be carried out at hotels,” and made other suggestions concerning cleanliness. Dr Chesson also wrote that ho had been unable to inspect the hotels in the Borough, but was prepared to inspect anv that the Committee desired. The following applications were granted:—
