The contest for the middle-weight championship of New Zealand, and a purse of 30 sovs. (presented by the Busli Boxing Association), was fought out in the Drill Hall, Paliiatua, last night, between Barney Ireland (Waipawa), the holder of the title, and Tom McGrath (late of Sydney), the newly appointed tutor of the Bush Boxing Association, Paliiatua. The fight was for the best of lb rounds. Up till tlfe 13th round McGrath did most of the attacking,_ but Ireland defended well, and, occasionally attacking, secured a slight lead on points. In the 11th round Ireland forced, matters, and soon had McGrath in distress. In the loth round Ireland, who was still fairly fresh, also went in for punishment, but his judgment was bad. The referee, Mr. O’Farrell, of Wanganui, declared the match a draw, amid cheers and groans. The amateur contest resulted: Welter—B. Kelly (Paliiatua), 10.51, heat McFarland (Woodville), 10.13. Welter —F. Knapp (Paliiatua) 10.4, v. Downes (Palmerston North) 10.1, a draw. Light weight—Robson (Woodville), 9.74, beat McDonald (Paliiatua) 9.8.

THE WELLINGTON FIGHTS

[press association tedegram.) AYELLINGTON, June 11

'The Wellington amateur boxing tourney was concluded to-night. Results :

Bantam.—AY. H. B rice (Wellington) heat G. McNicholl (Christchurch) after a. good bout. An extra round was fought to decide the winner. Feather-weight.—F. Leary (AA'ellington) beat B. Tracey (AYellington) after a fight that was willing all through. The winner was clever and used both hands well.

Light-weight.—J. Hunter (AVelLington) beat J. Smith (Petone) after a bout that sorely tried both boys. Hunter met and beat MacFarland in the final, the latter’s towel being thrown in in the second round. Middle-weight.—A. Dalziell (Alanawatu) beat B. Finnic (AYellington) after a good fight. Dalziell —the shorter of the two —tired the othpr man down and piled on points towards the end.

There were no heavy-weight contests, no competitors coming forward.
