AUCKLAND PAINTING TRADE.
A SUDDEN SLUMP
[PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM]. AUCKLAND, June 19. Conditions in the painting trade are very unsatisfactory in Auckland at the present time, and the names of 35 men who are seeking employment are on the books of the union. These are not the only tradesmen who are out of work, for there are many men who, ■Have not recorded their names, knowing that no good would result from their doing so. The reason for theslump is due to bad weather, which has been frequent of late, and the fact that numbers of painters are coming to Auckland from the Old Country, the South, and from Sydney. “I don’t anticipate- that there will be very much work in the painting line in connection with the Exhibition,” the secretary of the union stated yesterday. “Whatever work will be required to be done will probably be left to the last moment, and then we will have to work night and day to get it finished. The painting of the stalls will be about the only work available, and as to whether this is likely to lead to the employment Of many hands, of course, it is impossible to sa3 r . The men now coming to Auckland have an idea that the Exhibition is going to make work in this city plentiful, and they are. in hopes of obtaining employment. I would like it known in tire south and in Sydney that it is no use coming to Auckland for work, as there is no immediate prospect of there being any improvement.”
