SOCCER-
COUNTY (2) v. RANGERS B (1)
This game took place at Avow stead, and Rangers playing a man .short put up a fine game, and County were rather luckv in scraping through with the odd- goal in three. The combination of neither team was first-class, but all the players put their best into the game, which was -played with the best of good feeling, not an angry word being heard all through the game. J. Williams (1) and G .Webster (1) scored.- for County, and Wilshaw for Rangers. The ground was in splendid order, and with nets elected and lines and corner posts in piopei position it is hoped the town clubs will take a lesson. For County Holt was a strong back. Wi Ran-gi, who took his place on the "Soccer” field for the first time, shaped fairly well and when bo gets a little more coaching will develop into a good man. Briscoe was the best of a , good- halt line, and Webster and King perhaps i'l little the best of a useful forward "lot. For Rangers,, Burke ui goal
showed flair form, saving one or two shots in good, style. Wells and Drube played hard games at back. Clark piayeu pernaps the best game on the ground, and Wallace ably assisted him in the half line. Salmon is inrprov“l", fast and is a man worth coaching, 'v llsjttaw wa-s tlio best of the forwards, playing with plenty of dash and taking the ball smartly, but to-day seemed to dwell too long before putting his final kick in and thus lost Several good chances of scoring. RANGERS A (1) v’. TURANGANUI
The above game took place on the Reserve yesterday and the result came as a bit of a surprise to the wearers of the black and gold. The losers were short of Summer and Read, but did not lose anything by the substitution of Hosier and W. Hannah. The blues’ team turned up in full force and are to be congratulated: on being the first team to lower Turanganui’s colors. The only score of the match was Rangers’ goal in the first half, scored from a good shot by Jim Somerton from about 30 yards out. For the winners Lowdnes was a fair goalie. French and Downie never require any praise. “Scotty” was perhaps the pick of a fair lialf line, but he will have to change his bootmaker. In the forward lino all played well, no one shining out in particular. For the losers Ansell was good in goal, but takes too many risks in getting away from his goal line. The- backs both played good games. Hosier was the pick of the halves, and l Peat and Stone of the forwards.
