THE ARCHITECTS’ BILL.
A NEW MEASURE. [BY TELEGRAPH —PARLIAMENTARY CORRESPONDENT] WELLINGTON, J une 29. The Attorney-General (the Hon. A. L. Herdman) gave notice on Friday of his intention, to introduce the New Zealand Institute of Architects’ Bill, but it is not by any means the Architects’ Bill that has been so roundly condemned by municipalities in different parts of New Zealand. A Bill of the same title was introduced by the Minister last year, but not with the intention of putting it through all stages. That Bill was by the Institute of Architects, simply introduced to the House in order to allow members to familiarise themselves with its contents. The clause of the Bill of last year to which such strong exception has been taken provided that no local authority could 1 construct or alter a building at a cost of £IOOO or more without oo f loying a registered architect. This would, of course, have had the eftec 1 ' of preventing all municipalities. from carrying out ther building prog.amines with the assistance of their own engineering staffs. The local bodies, who have been alarmed at the prospect of such a. clause becoming law, will be glad to learn, as is the fact, that the Bill which the Attorney-General has introduced this session contains so such provision.
