THE SUMMER SHOW.

THE PROGRAMME ARRANGED

ALTERED DATES ADHERED TO. A meeting of the committee of the Povertv Bay A. and R. .Association was held yesterday morning for the purpose, principal.y, of ai ranging the programme for this year’s summer show. The dates for the Show, it will be remembered, are fixed for October 28 and 29, a week later than usual. On the subject, the secretary of the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Association wrote as follows:- — “I beg to advise you that at the annual meeting of members held today, June 27. the date of our spring j show, was altered from 15th and lOlii ! October to 22nd and 23rd. The re.i- ---| son for this is that the Palmerston and ! Christchurch .Societies have each moved forward one week this year, and if our Society and yours and Carterton die! not also move on one week there would be .a gap of a fortnight left without a show, and exhibitors who usually attend a round of the shows would probably object and omit the earlier shows altogether. The Carter- ! ton Society had already announced i their dates for 22nd and 23rd, but on discovering the probable gap, advised that then- would prefer to move on Ci week if we would also do so. '1 he feeling of the < mnmittee to-day was quite unanimous that- the alteration was desirable, and that your Society would he prepared to fall in with the alteration, as it must be better for you as well as for us. If tlierc bad been time to communicate with you and get an expression from your committee this would have been done. \Ve trust that your Society will also agree to move a week. The secretary .of the Poverty Bay Turf Club also wrote : —"At a meeting of my committee held to-day, July 9th, to consider a request from a deputation oi your M.;ciety teat tins Club should alter its spring meeting dates to Show Week, I \v is instructed to notify your Association as follows: ‘ln answer to the deputation iron) the A. and P. Association, it was decided to reply that this committee does not think that they can get the dates altered by the Racing Conference, as thev have already been provisionally fixed, and would ask the Show Committee to adhere to their original dates.’ ”

The committee affirmed the decision to lioTd the Show on October 28 and 29 it being agreed that it was necessary to coin])ly with the request ot the Hawke’s Bay Society, so that entries would not he interfered with. Such exhibitors ns [Messrs Hutchinson, Allen. Buiek. Bray, and Short usually exhibited at Nap.vr first, and. then came on to Gisborne, so that ,f was to the interests of the Association to fall in wit!) the suggestion. -' n . v ' teration in.the arrangement of the dates would probable ! -ve the effect of keeping the numerous side-shows a wav from the gathering and these are admittedly a hi" attraction to the summer show. . The committee went thoroughly into the matter cf the programme, and made some additions and alterations, although in the main the programme will he much the same as that of last year. . . Among the additions is a class i*» maiden hacks, to he judged on paces. Two Jersey cattle classes have o-een added; also a Hereford cow class. « class for shorn ram and 2-tooth On the suggestion, of Al. Cahill. wool expert, it was agre-d r.o rate a special class for fleeces and to set aside a portion of the pioduce shed for the purpose. '1 he suggested class was for Rnmncy-T>incolus and other breeds. The class was agreed on as for ilecees of a Romney ram aim a. Romney ewe, ancr the same tor tancoins. . . The prize money m several classes has been increased bv Cl, making the (irst prize C.T instead, ol C2- in the following classes; Weight-carrying hark,- walking hack, single harness horse, light spring-cart horse, carriers and tradesmen’s turnouts. There has,, in the past, been little competition m the class for pairs of harness horses, so, with a view to inducing more on tries to come forward in these events, tlie range has been altered from inches to 3 inches. .
