ARBOR DAY.
TO-DAY'S CELEBRATIONS
THE BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION’S PROGRESS.
Arbor Day was celebrated by the Government offices yesterday, but the. day will be marked in Gisborne gencjjlally to-day—the weekly hair-holiday —when a public function will be hela and at the several schools the event will also be impressed on the minds of tlie children. The chief celeb ration will take place on the bank facing the wharf and opposite the Post Office, commencing ar 2 p.m. The scheme to plant this bank and so beautify the approach to the town was taken up with commendable zeal and .enthusiasm, with the result that the place has received special attention at the hands of the Borough gardener and is ready for the planting of trees and shrubs. The Mayor (Dir .J. R. Kirk). Dir John Townley and Dir Geo. Grant ('president of the Beautifying Assoc iation). will deliver short addresses end the City Band will be present to supply an attractive programme of music. A few trees will be planted, as a beginning to the beautifying scheme, and some posts for the new fence which is to separate the enclosure will be put in. • Dir George Smith has donated 25 posts for this purpose, and,it is probable that he will sink the first post to-day. The new-born desire to beautify the town and its environments is undoubtedly the outcome of the efforts of the recently-resuscitated Beautifying Association, and it is pleasing to chronicle that the Association’s 'fund' have been increased to £'7o during the past few days as the outcome of donations and , subscriptions. Dir Grant hopes that the Association's treasury will lie £IOO in hand by the conclusion of to-day's celebrations. The celebrations at the Gislnirne. Manga papa, Kaiti and surrounding schools will be hold at a sufficiently early hour to enable the children to attend the function in town. On Thursday next the High School celebration will take place andj promises to be tlie most cong?I’:o function of those held*locally. The Governors have voted £4O toward# the cost of trees and shrubs, which will be planted under the supervision of Dir A. Thomson.
