SATURDAY’S GAMES

I FOOTBALL. j j POVERTY RAY R v. AA'AI KOHL'. ! COUNTRY TEAM DEFEATED. | The above match was played on the local Domain last Saturday, there ! being a very meagre attendance, owing no doubt to the threatening .state of the weather. During a part of the first spell it rained very heavily and made the ball and ground very slipperv. which militated against good football. The country team put up a good fight, and have several promising forwards who hold their own with the town players, especially if they were up to the finer points of the game. Country backs were very mediocre, and repeatedly let their side down, which made the battle a very hard one | for the forwards. The local hacks j showed no cohesion, bnt some good ini dividual play was shown, especially by ! Allen, who was the best back on the i ground, his line kicking being a fea- | turo of the game. Guthrie was the J best of an even set of forwards. Following were the teams: ! AVaikohu (red): Full-back, Brierly; 1 three-quarters,- AY. King, AA r . McDonald, Kingi; five-eighths, Spooner, .Meta.; half, Hansby; wing forward, Peacoeke: forwards, R. Brown, J. Brown, Swainson, Xcpia, ■Horne, Simmonds. Poverty Bay (red, black and yellow): Full-back, Rangi; three-quar-ters, Rukingi, Allen, AV'itana; fiveeighths. Chrisp, McLeod; half, Murray; wing forward, Muir; forwards, Kokiri, Davis, Guthrie, Stitchbury, Armitage, AVhite, Gardner. Poverty Bay kicked off, the ball being returned to McLeod, whose kick was charged down and the country men made a severe rally on the locals’ i line. "Wanna brought relief by intcri oepting a pass and Rukingi kicked • .well down the field. Gilbert, Simmonds and King brought play hack ! and the latter kicked too hard, a force resulting. Reds were bent on getting | in early, and kept knocking at the ; door, lint nothing tangible resulted, j Murray got the hall away to McLeod, I who hung on. The latter player repeatedly did this and spoilt the backs, ! and it was hard to understand why he ! was kept there while there were sev--1 oral who could have filled the bill with advantage. A nice dribble by Brown i and McDonald was nicely stopped by i Allen finding the line. From a pass ! Alien badly heat several opponents ' and scored in a good position, hut . Guthrie failed to goal—Poverty Bay 3, AVaikohu 0. This reverse woke up the country men, and Gilbert dribbled from half-way over the line, just missing scoring." Reds assailed their opponents again, and Rukingi broke away and found the lino at half-way. Allen made a good attempt from a penalty and immediately after Murray landed a goal from a free —R.B. G, Waikohu 0. Faulty handling by the yellow backs allowed Meta, Simmonds and McDonald to dribble the ball three parts the length of the field, the latter scoring, a good try, which ho made a good attempt to convert. — R.B. 6, AVaikohu 3. A nippy passing bout bv Hansby, Meta and King was stopped by the latter being pushed out a couple of yards from A ellows line. Allen -sent the country men hack with a good kick to touch. Yellows were now trying to indulge in passing amongst their hacks, but it was very faulty and ineffective. Guthrie, Davis, and Kokiri dribbled to Reds’ line, where from a throw-in Stitchbury scored and Murray missed tho kick—P.B. 9, AVaikohu 3. Rain now fell heavily, and the players had hard work to .stand up and handle the ball with any accuracy. Nepia, Swanson, and Gilbert put in some good work, but Guthrie returned with a good dribble and Reds were forced, which was repeated immediately after. County forwards, aided by Meta and McDonald, worked into tho town team’s territory, only to ho sent back by Davis and Armitage, a force. in the nick of time resulting. Half-time

Mew with Poverty Bay 9, Waikohu 3. Bain ceased upon resumption, and immediately after the start Guthrie and Gardiner dribbled from half-way, the former picking ur> and scoring in an easy position, Kokiri failing to materialise—P.B. 13 Waikohu 3. A ter a lot of straggling play Yellows invaded their opponents’ ground. Btikingi took a pass beautifully onehand from Murray and scored, and Stitchbury failed to goal. A real good dribble by Swainson nearly the length of the field ended in Gardner forcing in the nick of time. It was hard luck. Yellow were pressing the country players hard when Brown kicked, and McDonald following up secured tin* ball, taking the play the length of the field and scored a well-deserved try. Simmonds failed to find the uprights—P.B. 15 Waikohu 6 Bed forwards were playing a good game, Swainson dribbling over Yellows’ line, where Brown just- missed scoring, Gardner forcing. Guthrie took pl.iv to Beds’ territory, where Meta- made a. nice kick to half-way. McDonald broke away with the ball at his toe, but overran it when he bad a clear field in front of him. Guthrie came away and took the play to Reds' zone, where Rukingi made a nice pot, the ball going just outside. Beds’ forwards got oil a great rush, and Gardner kicked hack, the ball striking the posts, and after a melee close to the line the visitors wore awarded a penalty, hut the shot atgoal proved futile. Davis and Kokiri shot away with tne ball at tlioir toes and just as King looked dangerous King put in some fine work and saved the situation splendidly. The game ended without further score, which read: Poverty Bay B 15 Waikohu 9 Mr Brown refereed, and Messrs CTimins and J. C. E. Turner line urnpi res.
