KEPT POLICE AT BAY
ARMED MAN’S RESISTANCE. After a quarrel, John Robert Farnsworth, aged 24, a coal miner, was ejected from the Carribees Farm, Durham. Entering by a window, he o»tained possession of a double-barrelled gun and cartridges, and going outside he fired through ir>e front door, blowing out a panel, and shooting his cousin, Thomas Win. Farnsworth, aged 46, in the face. The police were sent for, but they dared not arrest the armed man for some hours. Eventually Farnsworth hid the gun in a stable and ran off towards Consett, but was overtaken and captured. The injured man was removed to the Newcastle Infirmary, there being little hope for his recovery.
