DEFENCE DEFAULTERS

SEVERAL OFFENDERS BEFORE THE COURT. A number of Territorials and Senior Cadets were brought before Mr R. S. Florance, S.M., yesterday, on charges of failing to attend parades. David Walsh, a Cadet, was fined -5s and costs (7s), defendant pleading guilty. Arnold Wilkinson did not appear m answer to the charge. Sergt.-Major C. Henry gave evidence as to defendant’s non-attendance at parade. Sen.-Sergt. Hutton said that this defendant was a man who neglected his obligations repeatedly. His Worship said this man bad been fined four times, and 40s on the last occasion: The fine would be increased to £3 and costs (7s). Sydney Hind pleaded guilty. Sen.-Sergt. Hutton said defendant was fined £2 and costs on August 22 for a like offence. . Defendant said that from the time ho was fined, he attended every parade except the one in question. ■Sen.-Sergt. Hutton said that this was correct, and the Department did not press for a heavy penalty. Defendant pointed out that be could not get away from his work on this particular night.
