GISBORNE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING LAST EVENING. The regular monthly meeting of the Gisborne School Committee was held last evening at the school. In the absence of the chairman, the Rev. L. D. Thomas, the Rev. W. Grant was voted to the chair. The matter of an increase of wages for the caretaker was brought up by correspondence. It was decided to t'han'k the Board of Governors of the High School for their communication, and to notify them that the matter will be finally dealt with when a satisfactory reply has been received from the Board of Education. It was also decided that a strongly-worded letter of protest be sent to the Board of Education, complaining of the fact that a previous communication regarding a request for an increase of wages for the caretaker had. been ideal t with by the chairman of the B . d, who had instructed the secrete ;y to give a certain reply without tie communication having- been in a|iy way laid before the Board; that the commit! ' respectfully request that alt communications from this committee to the h>.. r r d be dealt with by the Board, as it is only by so doing that the members 0.. n be made aware of the facts; that a cvpv of the previous, letter accompany tins resolution, and that the North V:i v d members be acquainted of the facts of toe case. Miss L. Sheen wrote resigning her position on the staff, having received promotion in another scholb!. It was unanimously agreed that Miss Sheen’s resignation be accepted with regret, and that the committee’s appreciation of her services in the school be recorded on the minutes. The finance''committee recommended the payment of sundry accounts, which were accordingly passed for payment. The visiting committee refiorted on its visit to the school. The leadmaster reported on the celebration of Dominion Day and Arbor Day. Mr. Darton had given his annual address to the senior pupils, and had supervised the planting of a number of, Native trees and shrubs in the school plantation. The attendance is suffering seriously from an epidemic of‘whooping cough. Bathing in the school bath begins again to-morrow. Referring to the resignation of Miss Sheen he said: “While I regret the loss of so capable a teacher, I recognise that she fully deserves the promotion she has received.” It was decided to send a letter of t'lginks and of appreciation of his interest in the school to Mr. Darton in connection with his address and work on Arbor Day. The Bath Committee reported having received a deputation from the Swimming Club, requesting certain concessions to the club on account of its members. It was decided that the matter be left in the hands of the Bath Committee with power to act.
