BRER RABBIT ABROAD.
CLOSL INVESTIGATIONS AT
MANGA IT
The young rabbit whirl) was shot bv Mr Laurie on the town skin ot the Mangatu River, at AVhaiatulu, was on display in town yesterday, and attracted .considerable attention. Jt is a buck rabbit, about six months’ old. A meeting of the East Coast Rabbit Board was held this morning to deal with the matter. Messrs W. I). Lvsnar, W. Ross, J. C. Field, and T. Holden being in attendance. Mr A. Canning was also present. The opinion was expressed by Mr Canning, who was until recently one of the Board’s chief rabbiters engaged in the extermination of rabbits in the Opotiki and Whakatane districts, and who is an expert in anything connected with rabbits, that it was possible, for a young buck like this one to travel a considerable distance. Where an old one would not travel a younger one might. It was thought possible that the one in question had travelled away from the llangaroa patch, which is about 28 miles in a. straight lino, across improved hilly country, from tho locality where this rabbit was shot. • The meeting decided that Mr AY. Boss, who is also the Government official, should proceed to the place immediately, accompanied by Mr Canning, to make a thorough investigation of tho locality to see if there were signs of any further rabbits being there. Mr Ross will return to Gisborne on Saturday morning, when a special meeting of the Board will be held to receive a report, and decide what further action should be taken. In the meantime Mr Canning will remain on the place, and continue investigations util the Board instructs further.
