BOATING FATALITY AT TOLOGA BAY.

AGED MAORI LOSES HIS LIFE

SUCCUMBS AS RESULT OF SHOCK

[PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM] TOLOGA BAY, Dec. 6. Quite a gloom was cast over the township at mid-day to-day, when it became icnown that as a result of a boating accident at the mouth of the river a well-known Native identity known as Te Kera, but more familiarly known as “Teapot,” had lost his life.

It appears from the details available that three men—“ Teapot,” Ngapuhi, and Redmond—had been out iishing, and when entering the. river, their boat capsized on the bar. The accident happened close in shore. Ngapuhi swam ashore, and immediately went for assistance. Redmond and “Teapot” clung to the boat, but “Teapot” had to have the assistance of Redmond all the time. When Mr Holder arrived on the scene in liis launch, he found that the boat had drifted ashore. “Teapot” and Redmond were, however, still in the water, but in a shallow place. . . Albert Rangiuia and Mr Hei, solicitor, of Gisborne, drove over to the scene, and “Teapot” was conveved to the township. Although Dr Weeks was quickly on the spot, he found that “Teapot” had'not regained consciousness and to all appearances was dead. Steps to restore animation were, however, undertaken without- delay, -and despite the fact that they were for nearly two hours, had not the desired effect. “Teapot’’ is understood to have been 77 years of age. It is known that he took part in the troubles in Te Kooti’s day. Nothing is known, at the moment, as to his relations. It- is thought probable that no inquestmay be held, as Dr Weeks is prepared, it is understood, to sign the necessary certificate.
