GOOD WORK AT LYTTELTON
QIUET STEADY TOIL. [PRESS ‘ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 7. There were busy scenes on the waterfront at Lyttelton yesterday, the energies of the* agents and waterside workers being concentrated on finishing work at the numerous ships in order to get them away from port before the week-end. Eighteen ships were worked and the volume of cargohandled was very large. The Huddart Parker steamer Victoria has done good work, and lias cleared up a big accumulation of cargo for Wellington. The steamer loaded about 800 or 900 tons for northern ports. Having discharged several hundred tons of cargo from, Auckland, the Union Co’s steamer Wanaka sailed shortly after mid-day for Dunedin and Bluff.* She will load at Southern ports for Auckland.
The Corinthic sailed at 5 p.m. for Auckland, Gisborne, and Wellington to complete loading for London. Ships in port on Saturday were: Gladstone Pier/H.M.S. Pyramus and the schooners Eunice, Annie Harle, Aratapu, Eliza Perth, and Lily; No. 1 breastwork, Te Ariau and Karamu; No. 2 wharf, Wanaka, Wahine, Kowhai, and. Cygnet; No. 3 wharf, Victoria and Wakatu; No. 4 wharf,’ Sturmfels and Flora; No. 5 wharf, Canopus; No. 6 wharf, Titania and Reinuera; No. 7 wharf, Corinthic; No. 8 breastwork, Kini; in the stream, Kaitangata and Banbridge __ It is reported that all employers of drivers, and carters in Christchurch havp a sufficiency of labor and are fully manned. In fact- more labor is offering than there is work to give it. Some of the strikers who applied to he taken hack to their old positions have found that their, jobs have been given to others. engaged in drilling and cleaning up' the camp. During the past day or two the whole of camp has been thoroughly cleaned up and disinfected. The strikers’ camp on Mays Road, Papanui, was visited on Thursday evening by K. J. Cooper in command of- a reserve of specials, who, after introducing himself to those men in camp who did not know him, had atalk with them and told them that he had visited the camp in the interests of tlie maintenance of order oil the part of both sides. He asked the men not to hesitate to call upon him if any assistance was wanted. So favorable an impression was created by Mr Cooper that when he was leaving camp the men cheered him.
